    • Kass DA, Saeki A, Tunin RS, Recchia FA. Adverse effects of systemic vascular stiffening on cardiac dysfunction and adaptation to acute coronary occlusion. Circulation 1996; 93:1533-1541. This paper uses a dog model to demonstrate that aortic stiffening both increases cardiac afterload and reduces coronary perfusion in the subendocardial region and is thus likely to lower myocardial ischaemic threshold in the setting of coronary disease. This is one of the prime pathophysiological mechanisms by which large artery stiffening is likely to convey increased cardiovascular risk.

Validation and clinical application of a physiological model of the circulation. Circulation 1994; 89:2688-2699. Discusses use of arterial models in determining central compliance and considers that until it is shown that more complex models provide additional useful haemodynamic information that the simple two-element model can be considered adequate. The further point is made that arterial compliance estimation, although intrinsically dependent on other vascular parameters (for example, blood pressure, heart rate and stroke volume), cannot be predicted without simultaneous consideration of multiple components.

    • Parametric model derivation of transfer function for non-invasive estimation of aortic pressure by radial tonometry
    • Fetics B, Nevo E, Chen C-H, Kass DA. Parametric model derivation of transfer function for non-invasive estimation of aortic pressure by radial tonometry. IEEE Trans Biomed Eng 1999; 46:698-706. Discussion of the technical aspects of arterial transfer function (TF) generation. Simultaneous invasive central blood pressure and non-invasive radial blood pressure were recorded for 39 participants. Generalized TF was obtained using 20/39 and tested on 19/39. Reported that individual TF had improved performance over generalized TF only for indices that required signal components in a higher frequency range.
