Matrix polymers of Candida biofilms and their possible role in biofilm resistance to antifungal agents
-
Baillie GS, Douglas LJ: Matrix polymers of Candida biofilms and their possible role in biofilm resistance to antifungal agents. J Antimicrob Chemother 2000, 46:397-403. The authors exploit their previous observation, that biofilm matrix production can be modulated by growth conditions, to demonstrate that the antifungal resistance of organisms producing large or small amounts of matrix was similar.

Investigation of multidrug efflux pumps in relation to fluconazole resistance in Candida albicans biofilms
-
Ramage G, Bachmann S, Patterson TF, Wickes BL, Lopez-Ribot JL: Investigation of multidrug efflux pumps in relation to fluconazole resistance in Candida albicans biofilms. J Antimicrob Chemother 2002, 49:973-980. The authors demonstrate that C. albicans cells within a biofilm express genes encoding drug resistance determinants but that, paradoxically, biofilms formed from mutants lacking these genes exhibit antifungal resistance. This is the first molecular genetic analysis of the antifungal resistance phenotype of biofilms.
