Rapid assembly dynamics of the Escherichia coli FtsZ-ring demonstrated by fluorescence recovery after photobleaching
-
Stricker J, Maddox P, Salmon ED, Erickson HP: Rapid assembly dynamics of the Escherichia coli FtsZ-ring demonstrated by fluorescence recovery after photobleaching. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 2002, 99:3171-3175. Using fluorescent recovery after photobleaching (FRAP), the authors demonstrate that the Z-ring is a highly dynamic structure with a half-life of less than a minute. This result raises the possibility that the Z-ring is constantly being remodeled during septation. The Z-ring formed by a mutant with reduced GTPase activity is much less dynamic although cell division is not noticeably affected.

Asymmetric cell division in B. subtilis involves a spiral-like intermediate of the cytokinetic protein FtsZ
-
Ben Yehuda S, Losick R: Asymmetric cell division in B. subtilis involves a spiral-like intermediate of the cytokinetic protein FtsZ. Cell 2002, 109:257-266. Results from this paper demonstrate that an FtsZ spiral intermediate is involved in the switch of FtsZ from midcell to the pole. It also demonstrates that the developmental regulation of this switch involves increased expression of FtsZ and induction of the sporulation protein SpollE.

Targeting of (D)MinC/MinD and (D)MinC/DicB complexes to septal rings in Escherichia coli suggests a multistep mechanism for MinC-mediated destruction of nascent FtsZ-rings
-
Johnson JE, Lackner LL, de Boer PA: Targeting of (D)MinC/MinD and (D)MinC/DicB complexes to septal rings in Escherichia coli suggests a multistep mechanism for MinC-mediated destruction of nascent FtsZ-rings. J Bacteriol 2002, 184:2951-2962. This work shows that MinD and DicB, encoded by a defective phage, can target MinC to the septum. DicB does not recruit MinC to the membrane, whereas MinD does. It leaves open the question of whether MinD has to also bind to the membrane before it targets MinC to the septum.

Topological regulation of cell division in E. coli. spatiotemporal oscillation of MinD requires stimulation of its ATPase by MinE and phospholipid
-
Hu Z, Lutkenhaus J: Topological regulation of cell division in E. coli. spatiotemporal oscillation of MinD requires stimulation of its ATPase by MinE and phospholipid. Mol Cell 2001, 7:1337-1343. This paper demonstrates that MinE stimulates the MinD ATPase and that this correlates with the ability of MinE to induce MinD oscillation. Furthermore, the stimulation requires phospholipid vesicles, indicating that the Min proteins interact directly with phospholipids.

Dynamic assembly of MinD on phospholipid vesicles regulated by ATP and MinD
-
Hu Z, Gogol EP, Lutkenhaus J: Dynamic assembly of MinD on phospholipid vesicles regulated by ATP and MinD. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 2002, 19:6671-6676. In this paper, the authors demonstrate that MinD binds to phospholipid vesicles in the presence of ATP and is released by MinE. Furthermore, after MinD binds to phospholipids it assembles into polymers that deform the vesicles, suggesting that MinD assembles into polymers in vivo. This work, along with Hu and Lutkenhaus (2001) [27**], provides the biochemical basis for the Min oscillation.

van Den EF, Amos LA, Lowe J: Prokaryotic origin of the actin cytoskeleton. Nature 2001, 413:39-44. This paper demonstrates that MreB assembles into an actin-like filament. The crystal structure confirms that MreB has the same fold as actin and provides detailed information about the subunit contacts.

Prokaryotic DNA segregation by an actin-like filament
-
Moller-Jensen J, Jensen RB, Lowe J, Gerdes K: Prokaryotic DNA segregation by an actin-like filament. EMBO J 2002, 21:3119-3127. This paper demonstrates that ParM of plasmid R1, which is distantly related to MreB, forms an actin-like filament that is required for plasmid segregation. Filament formation is observed in vivo and in vitro. In vivo formation of the filaments depends upon the other two components of the plasmid segregation machinery. The results lead to a model in which plasmid partitioning is driven by the assembly of ParM filaments between paired plasmids.
