Effects of different doses on continuous veno-venous haemofiltration on outcomes of acute renal failure: A prospective randomised trial
-
Ronco C, Bellomo R, Homel P, et al.: Effects of different doses on continuous veno-venous haemofiltration on outcomes of acute renal failure: A prospective randomised trial. Lancet 2000, 356:26-30. The only randomized controlled trial comparing three doses of continuous venovenous hemofiltration in patients with ARF. This study demonstrated an improved survival rate when continuous venovenous hemofiltration was dosed to provide at least 35 mL/kg/h of ultrafiltration as compared with 20 mg/kg/h. The primary endpoint in this study was survival 15 days after discontinuation of treatment.

Daily hemodialysis and the outcome of acute renal failure
-
Schiffl H, Lang SM, Fischer R: Daily hemodialysis and the outcome of acute renal failure. N Engl J Med 2002, 346:305-310. The largest trial comparing daily intermittent hemodialysis to every-other-day intermittent hemodialysis in patients with ARF. The study, which had alternating patient assignment, reported a reduction in mortality from 46% with alternate-day hemodialysis to 28% with daily hemodialysis. The primary endpoint was survival 14 days after the last hemodialysis treatment.

A randomized clinical trial of continuous versus intermittent dialysis for acute renal failure
-
Mehta RL, McDonald B, Gabbal FB, et al.: A randomized clinical trial of continuous versus intermittent dialysis for acute renal failure. Kidney Int 2001, 60:1154-1163. A large, randomized, controlled trial comparing continuous renal replacement therapy with intermittent hemodialysis. This study was flawed by imbalanced randomization, which resulted in a greater severity of illness in patients in the continuous renal replacement therapy group. The primary outcome measure was all-cause ICU mortality. A higher mortality rate was observed in the continuous renal replacement therapy group as compared with the intermittent hemodialysis group.
