A study of 33 liver biopsies from 25 patients with JRA who had been treated with long-term MTX. No significant fibrosis was seen on any of the biopsies. However, body mass index and elevated serum liver enzymes correlated with mild liver abnormalities on biopsy.

Of the study population, 66% withdrew from the study because of side effects or inefficacy. Cyclosporin A was useful for some patients to lower the systemic corticosteroid dose and to control the fever.
