Polycystic ovarian syndrome is associated with obstructive sleep apnea and daytime sleepiness: Role of insulin resistance
-
Vgontzas A, Legro R, Bixler E, et al.: Polycystic ovarian syndrome is associated with obstructive sleep apnea and daytime sleepiness: Role of insulin resistance. J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2001, 86:517-520. Though this study focused on a small group of patients, it dealt with a group that is at risk for both diseases. The authors were able to control for obesity and, thus, investigate the effects of obstructive sleep apnea and its relation to insulin resistance.

Sleep-disordered breathing and insulin resistance in middle-aged and overweight men
-
Punjabi N, Sorkin J, Katzel L, et al.: Sleep-disordered breathing and insulin resistance in middle-aged and overweight men. Am J Respir Crit Care Med 2002, 165:677-682. The most striking point to this study was that the degree of desaturation correlated with worsening insulin resistance. This may lead to investigations into the effect of hypoxia on the endocrine system.

Snoring as a risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus: A prospective study
-
Al-Delaimy W, Manson J, Willett W, et al.: Snoring as a risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus: A prospective study. Am J Epidemiol 2002, 155:387-393. This was a large epidemiologic study of women. The assumption that snoring precedes or is associated with sleep apnea is important to this study. The authors do not assume that all of these snorers are sleep apneics, but given that sleep disordered breathing is almost always associated with snoring, snorers may be at greater risk of not only sleep apnea but also diabetes mellitus.
