    • (Self-organized) criticality takes its name from the scale-free, long-range correlated behavior of many physical systems near a phase transition (or critical point). Some misunderstandings have resulted from the distinct use of the term "critical slope." The latter refers to the threshold that a variable must exceed for local transport to occur in a sand pile model.
