    • This study generated a 3D probabilistic atlas of somatosensory areas, by registering somatosensory cytoarchitectonic areas that were objectively identified in 10 postmortem human brains to an atlas brain. Positron emission tomography studies of tactile responses to moving stimuli revealed activation of areas 3b and 1, but not area 3a.

    • Whole brain segmentation: Automated labeling of neuroanatomical structures in the human brain
    • In this study, the authors developed an automated method for segmenting subcortical structures in human MRI scans and demonstrated that the technique is comparable in accuracy to manual segmentation methods. The segmented data for several dozen structures were registered to an atlas space derived by an optimal linear transform that retains information about each anatomical class at the level of each voxel. The automated segmentation involves a Bayesian approach that takes advantage of anisotropic neighborhood relationships between different anatomical structures.

Dhenain et al. describe the methodology used to construct a digital atlas of mouse embryonic development from high-resolution MRI data. The associated web site ( http://mouseatlas.caltech.edu ) provides data from six embryonic ages that can be viewed as movies through stacks of sections or by downloading the image volumes. For the 13.5 day embryo, the atlas includes annotated delineation of brain structures in transverse slices plus 3D renderings of specific brain structures and organ systems.
