    • Caution must be made here. When we say that a single particle is in a mixed state we are actually making an averaging process. Sometimes, we talk about the average state of a single particle over a period of time, for example, confer to I.L. Chuang, Quantum information and computation: theory and practice, Ph.D. thesis, Stanford University, (1996) pp. 28, 29; Sometimes we average the wave function over external degrees of freedom, and yield a mixed state. But at a given instant, a single particle is in a state by a wave function. It is just because of lack of knowledge that we represent the state by its average property.
