    • NBD is a good singled oxygen oxygen sensitizer, i.e., it produces singlet oxygen from triplet oxygen. The singlet oxygen reacts effectively with double bonds to give peroxides that further oxidize or hydrolyze. In addition, singlet oxygen can produce hydroxyl radicals. Both singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radicals can attack NBD dye with corresponding loss of fluorescent activity.
