Well-ordered crystals exhibited a marked opalescence, such that a bright light applied at an oblique angle provided brilliant colors indicative of the crystallinity of the nanospheres and of the number of crystal layers present on the substrate. Coupled with optical microscopy, this allowed for rapid visible assessment of the quality and thickness of the nanopatterns prepared on each substrate.
