note
-
We define nanocomposites as falling between two extremes. In one they are multicomponent materials wherein at least one component phase has at least one dimension ≤ 100 nm. A more rigorous definition requires that the volumes of all component phases be ≤ 100 nm.

note
-
1H NMR indicated completion of reaction. The catalyst was deactivated by adding triphenylphosphine. The solvent was removed to give a white powder (yield > 80 %). Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis showed a polydispersity of 1.02. Td 5 % = 395°C. Ceramic yield at 1000°C under air was 43.7 % vs. 47.8 % by theory.

note
-
Note that optimization of mechanical properties studies as a function of cure time and temperature suggest that the curing conditions used lead to essentially complete reaction of all of the amine (for N ≥ 0.5) with all of the epoxide. This is important because this means that the epoxide components do not co-polymerize, as this would lead to a nanocomposite that was not completely discontinuous in both phases.
