    • The method is based on the observation of the cholesteric phase with an optical microscope in linearly polarised light: Disclination lines appear when a cholesteric is inserted in a variable-pathlength cell whose windows are appropriately rubbed to obtain the alignment necessary. From the distance between these lines one can obtain the cholesteric pitch. The sense of the cholesteric can be obtained either modifying the geometry of the cell, or from the observation of the rotatory power originated by the helicoidal molecular order.
