6. Both these solutions can be described as standing waves of the director deviation δn(z) = n(z) -z. They correspond to linear (splay-bend case) or to circular (conical twist-bend) polarization of the wave. In general, mixed solutions with "elliptical" polarization are also possible, but their energy is always higher than the energy of one of the two simple cases considered here.
