    • Crousillat resigned in January 2001, but his family still owns and controls América. On 28 January 2001, its top journalist, Nicolás Lúcar, aired an unconfirmed report that deliberately attempted to link President Valentín Paniagua with Montesinos. The allegation was later proven false; Lúcar fled to Costa Rica amid unanimous popular outrage, having dealt a severe blow to América's already poor credibility.
