12. For the VSM measurement, we deposited a 20-Ä-thick capping layer of Pd to protect against oxidation.
13. c might be caused by a possible interdiffusion at the NiFe/FeMn interface or by some other mechanisms. No exchange bias of the Co layer is likely to be due to contamination of the top surface of the AFM layer when it was transferred to the UHV chamber.

15. The value is somewhat different from 0.525 calculated from bulk Co and NiFe moments. This is consistent with an experimental observation that no Co signals are measured until a Co deposition of about 10 Å.
