As a rule of thumb, this decay rate increases with the asymmetry of the system. But there are also exceptions, where very asymmetric systems show long persistent transients.

One possible extension could be a Streak Camera based detection technique, capable of achieving a picosecond time resolution, although eventually sacrificing the maximum available delay range.

In addition to their small walkoff, which simplifies the alignment of the interferometer for a long delay range, retroreflectors have the advantage of producing a relay image of the incident beam. This enables the use of a near field image of the TOPAS output at the vacuum apparatus and thus long time delays between pump and probe pulse are possible without degeneration of the beam profile of the probe beam.

An interesting and more direct energy normalization scheme has been used successfully by Lee and co-workers in their IR-UV double resonance investigation of benzene and benzene dimer (Ref. 39). They used a time-of-flight mass spectrometer and IR and UV laser radiation in a two beam scheme with identical samples, one beam consisting of IR and UV light and the other only of UV light. Focused on slightly different positions in the ionization region of the mass spectrometer, separated peaks of the front and back focus have been obtained. The signal-to-noise ratio could be significantly improved by monitoring both peaks simultaneously. Later, this scheme has been successfully applied by Felker and co-workers for ionization detected stimulated Raman spectroscopy (Ref. 40). A similar scheme could be used for RCS experiments involving a time-of-flight mass spectrometer - like in (1+1′) PPI. In this case one focus could contain pump and probe pulse with parallel relative polarizations and the other focus pump and probe pulse with perpendicular relative polarizations.

Not included in this evaluation is the actual accuracy of the delay line, that is now becoming significant, adding 0.003% to the relative uncertainties. This uncertainty could be significantly reduced by an interferometric calibration of the delay line.
