An architectural description of the building, with 14 excellent photographs, was prepared shortly before its demolition in 1936 (Oswald (note 14)) and has fortunately preserved for posterity a record of its distinction and elegance. With its portico modelled on that of the Temple of Vesta in Tivoli (the order first adopted by Soane for the Bank of England), its neo-Greek interior and its magnificent library, it was one of the ornaments of the metropolis.

A Course of Lectures on Metallurgy delivered at the London Institution
-
John Taylor (1779-1863), FRS (1825), co-founder of the British Association and University College, London, was a mining engineer who set up a chemical manufacture in Stratford, East London, in 1812. He delivered at the London Institution gratuitously three lectures on practical mining in 1820 (MCM, 23 March 1820), and three lectures on metallurgy (1823). London, Letter 302
-
In a letter to Edward Magrath, Faraday wrote (23 July 1826): 'Upcott knows well enough that to the world, an hour's existence of our Institution is worth a year of the London; and though it were destroyed, still the remembrance of it would live for years to come in places, where the one he lives at has never been heard off [sic]. . . . One can't imagine how it is, that he is only assistant librarian at such an Unknown Institution as the London. . . .' Frank A. J. L. James (editor), The Correspondence of Michael Faraday, Vol. 1 (London, 1991), Letter 302. William Upcott (1779-1845) was assistant librarian (1806-34) at the London Institution, where he also resided for a time.

Vol. 4, Additions 1843-52 (1852), 510 pp. The work was preceded by the Catalogue of 1813 (and Supplement, 1830) and was followed by occasional Annual Lists of new acquisitions (e.g. 1860, 1862, 1864), but its later full re-issue was beyond the resources of the Institution.

H. J. P. Arnold, William Henry Fox Talbot, Pioneer in Photography and Man of Science (London, 1977). This extensive and meticulous biography contains numerous incidental references to Malone and declares (p. 169) that 'his valuable if unspectacular role in the early history of photographic processes has been inadequately recorded'.

The successful candidate was James Smith Brazier, who had acted as substitute Professor for Andrew Fife, MD, the holder of the Chair since 1814, who had lately suffered from ill health. Chemistry at Aberdeen played then a very subordinate role, confined entirely to the training of the medical students. [C. H. The Rev. William Rogers (1819-96) won great esteem for his efforts in founding schools for poor children in deprived areas of London. Surprisingly, he did not refer to the London Institution in his memoirs, Reminiscences of William Rogers, Rector of St. Botolph, Bishopsgate. Compiled by the Rev. R. H. Hadden (London, 1888).

When, after seven years' service, Armstrong submitted a request for an increase in his salary to £100 p.a., it was refused with regret 'that the current state of the finances of the Institution did not permit of their acceeding to his proposal on the present occasion' (MCM, 13 June and 11 July 1877). In 1877 and 1879, Armstrong received from the Chemical Society Research Fund grants of £25 and £100 in support of his investigations, a sum totalling two and a half times his annual salary (see Jubilee of the Chemical Society (London, 1896), 198).

The Literary and Philosophical Societies of Manchester (1781) and Newcastle (1793) antedate this development. The former was a more strictly scientific Society, issuing Transactions and Memoirs and enjoying a respectable academic reputation, largely linked to John Dalton, its President for twenty years (1824-44).

The 'Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution' has occupied its original house on the brow of Highgate Hill uninterruptedly since 1840. Today it provides for its 850 subscribers a lecture theatre, reading and meeting rooms, and organizes lectures, concerts and exhibitions. Its extensive library of 25,000 volumes includes a local archive, and a notable special collection of works by and about S. T. Coleridge, the poet, critic, friend of H. Davy and life-long student of science, whose last home (1823-34) in Dr Gillman's residence at 3 The Grove is situated in the immediate neighbourhood.
