High dose chemotherapy as initial salvage chemotherapy in patients with relapsed testicular cancer
-
2 Bhatia S, Abonour R, Porcu P, et al.: High dose chemotherapy as initial salvage chemotherapy in patients with relapsed testicular cancer. J Clin Oncol 2000, 18:3346-3351. Sixty-five patients treated in the 6 years between 1992 and 1998 with tandem high-dose treatment as initial salvage therapy, with 57% continuously disease free and 62% overall survival, set a new standard for future comparison.

Long-term testosterone treatment prevents gonadal and adrenai tumorigenesis of mice transgenic for the mouse inhibin-alpha subunit promoter/simian virus 40 T-antigen fusion gene
-
15 Rilianawati, Kero J, Paukku T, et al.: Long-term testosterone treatment prevents gonadal and adrenai tumorigenesis of mice transgenic for the mouse inhibin-alpha subunit promoter/simian virus 40 T-antigen fusion gene. J Endocrinol 2000, 166:77-85. A transgenic mouse model was developed by using a 6-kb fragment of the inhibin-alpha subunit promoter fused with simian virus T-antigen coding sequence. These mice, by the age of 5 to 8 months, had a 100% incidence of Leydig cell tumors resulting from leutinizing hormone over stimulation, which was suppressed by testosterone supplements.

RPLND or primary chemotherapy in clincal stage IIA/B non-seminomatous germ cell tumours? Results of a prospective multicentre trial including quality of life assessment
-
50 Weissbach L, Maatz RB, Flechtner H, et al.: RPLND or primary chemotherapy in clincal stage IIA/B non-seminomatous germ cell tumours? Results of a prospective multicentre trial including quality of life assessment. Eur Urol 2000, 37:582-594. An underpowered but important study comparing use of retroperitoneal lymph node dissection versus chemotherapy for clinical stage 2. The authors do not comment on the significantly lower incidence of loss of fertility after chemotherapy-induced down staging presurgery.

57 Res U, Res P, Kastelic D, et al.: Birth after treatment of a male with seminoma and azoospermia with cryopreserved-thawed testicular tissue. Hum Reprod 2000, 15:861-864. An important anecdote that needs to be remembered by all doing orchidectomy on a man with a tumor in a solitary testis, because it demonstrates that adequate sperm can be harvested for conception at a later date.

-
60 Travis L, Andersson M, Gospodarowicz M, et al.: Treatment associated leukemia following testicuiar cancer. J Natl Cancer Inst 2000, 92:1165-1171. A possibly worrying association between cisplatin dose and leukemia, but despite the large database, the small number of cases fails to make it possible to separate out the contribution of etoposide to these cases.

62 Meinardi M, Gietema J, Graaf Wvd, et al.: Cardiovascular morbidity in long term survivors of metastatic testicuiar cancer. J Clin Oncol 2000, 18:1725-1732.
