Evidence for a causal association between human papillomavirus and a subset of head and neck cancers
-
9 Gillison M, Koch W, Capone R, et al.: Evidence for a causal association between human papillomavirus and a subset of head and neck cancers. J Natl Cancer Inst 2000, 92:709-720. Building on findings from epidemiologic and molecular studies that preceded it, this paper provides very strong evidence that HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancers comprise a distinct molecular, clinical, and pathologic disease entity that is causally associated with HPV infection. HPV positivity significantly improved disease-free survival.

-
30 Frisch M, Hjalgrim H, Jaeger A, et al.: Changing patterns of tonsiliar squamous cell carcinoma in the United States. Cancer Causes Control 2000, 11:489-495. Tonsiliar cancer incidence rates are evaluated separately from other oral cavity cancers in this paper. Incidence rates are increasing despite declines in tobacco use, suggesting increasing exposure to other carcinogens. The author hypothesizes that this finding may be because of HPV.

This paper is the first to report an increased risk for tonsillar carcinoma in immunosuppressed individuals.
