This paper examines perceived ill-health in smokers, using data from a population survey, and finds that ill-health is greater in smokers from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. This finding is independent of smoking behaviour, and has relevance for those planning interventions to improve health in smokers.

This paper compares a traditional US working environment with one managed with a Japanese management system, using semi-structured interviews and direct observation in the workplace. They found that the traditional US environment was associated with higher levels of alcohol consumption. Alcohol policies did predict drinking behaviour.

    • 10 Room R, Makela K. Typologies of the cultural position of drinking. Stud Alcohol 2000; 61:475-483. This complex review describes four ideal types of the cultural position that can be distinguished: abstinent; constrained ritual drinking; banalized; and fiesta drunkenness. They conclude that these types do not fully explain the complex cultural factors involved in drinking behaviour, and propose an alternative system of typologies.

African Americans commence drinking when older and have fewer problems. African Americans use stimulants as their most frequently used other drug and the other groups use cannabis.
