Anterior neopharyngeal pseudodiverticulum: A possible cause of dysphagia in laryngectomized patients
-
10 Oursin C, Pitzer G, Fournier P, et al.: Anterior neopharyngeal pseudodiverticulum: a possible cause of dysphagia in laryngectomized patients. Clin Imaging 1999, 23:15-18. In this prospective study, the investigators examined 20 laryngectomy patients using endoscopy and dynamic radiographic imaging. Data revealed that radiographic imaging was superior to laryngoscopy in the demonstration of pseudodiverticulum and provided additional information on functional implications during swallowing.

Laser treatment of symptomatic anterior pharyngeal pouches after laryngectomy
-
21 Pennings RJ, van den Hoogen FJ, Marres HA: Laser treatment of symptomatic anterior pharyngeal pouches after laryngectomy. Head Neck 1999, 21:310-314. Patients with symptomatic anterior pharyngeal pouch underwent carbon dioxide laser treatment and subsequently completed a questionnaire about pre-and postoperative symptoms. The authors provide an excellent discussion about whether the swallowing symptoms are related to this common anatomic variation or are directly related to total laryngectomy. They conclude that not all swallowing disorders are related to laryngectomy as eight of nine patients noticed an obvious improvement in their swallowing after the operation.

Quality of life after laryngectomy: Are functional disabilities important?
-
23 Deleyiannis FW, Weymuller EA, Coltrera MD, et al.: Quality of life after laryngectomy: are functional disabilities important? Head Neck 1999, 21:319-324. Preliminary results obtained from 10 laryngeal cancer survivors suggest that various functional limitations caused by laryngectomy, including swallowing dysfunction, are not necessarily associated with a worsening of QOL.
