Because of their metallicity, kinematics, and spatial distribution, population II stars are thought to be older stars formed early on in the formation of the Milky Way.

These experiments use the new technique of infrared laser induced thermal ionization with a free-electron laser. Neutral clusters are irradiated by a pulsed IR laser. When the laser wavelength is resonant with an IR active mode, the cluster can be heated by multiple absorption of photons. When there is sufficient excess energy, dissociation may occur. However, in clusters with strong bonding and a relatively low ionization energy, as is the case for some metal-carbide clusters, electron emission can become competitive with, or even dominant over, dissociation. Tuning the laser while measuring the mass-analyzed ion yield produces an IR spectrum of the neutral cluster.
