Lipids were extracted by a chloroform/methanol/water mixture (at a ratio of 10:10:3) and separated by TLC on silica gel 60 (Merck) eluted with chloroform/methanol/ water (10:10:3).

    • 3H-labeled fatty acids (35 μO per 3 ml of blood) for 45 min at 37°C with 4% CO2 (74). Caprylate (8:0) (American Radiolabeled Chemicals) was at 20 Ci/mmol, laurate (12:0) (American Radiolabeled Chemicals) was at 60 Ci/mmol, myristate (14:0) (Amersham) was at 53 Ci/mmol. and palmitate (16:0) (DuPont) was at 43 Ci/mmol. Parasites were then separated from host blood cells (74), and lipids were extracted by chlorofonm/methanol/water (10:10:3). Animal care followed institutional guidelines.
