    • The simulated annealing method can be understood by an analogy with the way in which liquids freeze and crystallize or in which metals cool and anneal. In a liquid at high temperatures the molecules move freely with respect to one another. When the liquid is cooled, the mobility is lost. With slow cooling the atoms have ample time to rearrange themselves, and the system approaches the ground-state energy. A fast cooling may lead to a metastable state having a higher energy (local minimum).
