As such, they demand obedience of us. To refuse to act on our own precepts simply because others reject them is to fail to give proper weight to our own moral beliefs' (J. Universal inclusion therefore presupposes optimum discursive conditions determined by such value postulates as freedom and equality; see G. Kneer and A. Nassehi, N. Luhmanns Theorie sozialer Systeme. Eine Einführung (Munich: W. Fink 1993), 159. This essentially represents a Habermasian 'ideal speech situation', in which equal opportunity to participate in public discourse is intended to achieve a universal consensus involving both in-and marginalized out-groups. However, Lyotard criticizes this move towards consensus, since it re-establishes a dominant Enlightenment meta-narrative in which the most persuasive argument will be voiced by the majority group. Thus, the drawing up and implementation of rules for inclusion would remain a hegemonic privilege of the in-group; see D. R.
