Chapter 18, Section 10 of the Penal Code (18:10 Strafflagen) reads: "If anyone with another person commits fornication, which is against nature, or if anyone commits fornication with animals; be punished to hard labor maximum two years." 19. The female presence in the discourse of bestiality, masturbation, and homosexuality is almost nonexistent. In Liliequist's study of bestiality in pre-modern Sweden, only nine of more than 1,200 accused persons were women. In the twentieth century no female perpetrators of bestiality were brought to court. Even if masturbation among girls was discussed, the campaigns against it concentrated on young boys. With regard to homosexuality, of more than 1,500 persons charged for "unnatural fornication" between 1913 and 1950, only eleven were women, and lesbian sexuality played a very tangential role in the discourse around homosexuality. (See Sveriges Officiella Statistik, Serie Brottsligheten [1913-1950]). Criminal statistics are not detailed enough between 1878 and 1912 to assess the number of people then accused of this crime.

94. In 1896 a Supreme Court ruling defined "fornication, which is against nature" (otukt, som emot naturen är) in section 18:10 as sexual acts between persons of the same sex. Before that it could apply to any "unnatural" sexual behavior, including oral or anal sex between man and woman. When used for prosecuting sexual activity between different sexes, it was usually applied to sexual molestation of young girls, when "natural" intercourse had not taken place. But as late as 1908, a cab driver and a female prostitute in Stockholm were both prosecuted for "fornication, which is against nature" after having had oral sex in his open horse cab.
