Note that for parallel wave vectors of equal magnitude all transitions to \e, including the sideband transitions, are suppressed, whereas for antiparallel wave vectors the carrier excitation vanishes as desired and the two wave vectors add up on the sidebands. This effect is known from Raman sideband cooling [8,11].
