The length of the oligo(styrene) coil (C) in the extended chain conformation was taken from computer-simulation experiments (Cerius2, Macromodel) and estimated to be 20 Å. Combination of these two lengths gives a estimation of the intercolumnar distance: D = R + C = 30 Å + 20 Å = 50 Å.
