With the data from the Honolulu Heart Program's fourth examination (1991-1998), the investigators assessed orthostatic hypotension in relation to subsequent 4-year all-cause mortality among a cohort of 3522 Japanese American men 71 to 93 years old. Although the prevalence of orthostatic hypotension was only 13%, it was found to be a marker of physical frailty and significant independent predictor of 4-year all-cause mortality.

This one-page article succinctly defines orthostatic hypotension pure anatomic failure, Parkinson's disease with autonomic failure, and multiple system atrophy based on a consensus among 15 leading neurology specialists from both sides of the Atlantic.
