Actually, this change of variable is not strictly necessary. It may be shown to roughly "square root" the range of values spanned by the coefficients of matrices U and W introduced in Sec. V A. The ensuing reduction of numerical stiffness allows computations at larger sizes of the shell lattice. However, the switch from δb to h gets totally impracticable when the matrix B cannot be easily inverted.
