Mayer et al., "A Comparison of Competing Models." The investment community also responded very quickly to the Challenger news story. The stock market value of Morton-Thiokol, the manufacturer of the Challenger's O-rings, dropped by 20 percent within a few hours of the disaster (this stock market loss was recovered within the following month). This observation suggests that the stock market is one indicator of public opinion for certain news events.

Post-hearing discussion of a news event with others (the question asked by several scholars) may be quite different from telling others about the news event, as Mayer and others ("A Comparison of Competing Models") pointed out.

Another possible solution to the funding of firehouse research on news diffusion is provided by quick-response research on such disasters as floods, earthquakes, and hurricanes. The National Science Foundation provides funding to a research center at the University of Colorado to which investigators apply for preplanned and prefunded research. Then, when a natural disaster occurs (one does not need to wait very long), the investigator contacts the Boulder research center, and begins gathering data at the disaster site.
