    • 1H NMR signals of 1 broadened even at room temperature, in the reaction with equivalent amounts of substituted phenols. This indicates the presence of rapid exchange between the ylides and the phosphonium phenoxides, and the protonation step is slower compared to the ring-opening of epoxide. The overall reaction rates approximately represent those of the rate-determining step.
