A solution of Ph2PCl (1.21 g, 5.5 mmol) in anhydrous benzene (20 mL) was added with stirring to 9, 10-bis(propaminomethyl)anthracene (0.80 g, 2.5 mmol) and triethylamine (1.0 g, 9.6 mmol) in anhydrous benzene (20 mL) at 0 °C. The mixture was stirred for 7 h at room temperature. The solvent was removed under vacuum, CH2C12 (30 mL) was added, and the solid was removed by filtration. The filtrate was concentrated to about 10 mL, and subsequently diethyl ether was added to give a yellow solid. The product was recrystallized from CH2C12 and ether (3:1) (0.94 g, 54.5%). Selected data for 1: mp 171-172 °C; *H NMR (CDC13) <5 0.25-0.42 (t, 6H, 2CH3), 2.76-3.00 (m, 4H, 2CH2), 0.70-1.10 (m, 4H, 2CH2), 5.26 (s, 4H, 2CH2), 7.407.48 (m, 20H, 2Ph), 7.77-7.87 (m, 4H, 2CH), 8.60-8.70 (m, 4H, 2CH); 31P{'H} NMR (CDC13) <5 55.73 (s, 2P). Anal. Calcd for CisHeN: C, 80.03; H, 6.73; N, 4.27. Found: C, 80.21; H, 6.85; N, 4.07.
