    • Recent experiments on sphere packings show that the system responds to changes in Γ differently on very short, very long, and intermediate time scales. On very short time scales or in the final steady state, a reduction in Γ leads to an increase in ρ, while an increase produces larger voids and thus a smaller ρ. The irreversible behavior occurs over intermediate length tapping intervals [C. Josserand, A. Tkachenko, D.M. Mueth, and H.M. Jaeger, e-print cond-mat/0002401.].
