The iterative geometry with ω = 0 becomes physically relevant when applied to an interface between a lamellar and an isotropic phase rather than to a grain boundary in the bulk; at the interface, the bases of the TFCDs and the residual area differ in surface director orientation and thus bring different surface energies to the total energy balance.
