The term 'big house' appears to be unique to colloquial usage in Ireland, where it carries overtones of sectarian difference as well as class exploitation. It recurs as a major theme in the Anglo-Irish novel, for example in the work of Maria Edgeworth, C. R. Maturin, Joyce Gary and Elizabeth Bowen. For an introductory discussion see J. Genet (Ed.), The Big House in Ireland: Reality and Representation (Dingle 1991).

These sums could be enormous. For example, the sixth duke of Devonshire spent over £100 000 in two campaigns in 1812-14 and 1851-58 rebuilding Lismore Castle, Co. Waterford. Perhaps more typical was the £13700 spent by Sir Henry Hervey-Bruce on rebuilding Downhill, Co. Derry, between 1870-74. Neither sum was extraordinary when compared with the cost of nineteenth-century English country houses. Beckett cites figures ranging from £8000 for Thoresby Hall to £250000 for Tottenham House, both rebuilt in the 1820s. See Beckett, Aristocracy, 332.
