Ibid., 188; 'rundale' was the term widely used-Young was one of the first to employ it-to describe an Irish system of farming based on communal ownership and working of scattered plots of arable land; a complimentary dimension was the seasonal migration of livestock to upland summer pastures under the care of younger members of the community, a practice known as 'booleying' from the Gaelic for milking place or summer dwelling. For fuller discussion see E. E. Evans, Irish Heritage (Dundalk 1963) 47-56.
