Late effects of chemotherapy compared to bone marrow transplantation in the treatment of pediatric acute myeloid leukemia and myelodysplasia
-
5 Leahey AM, Teunissen H, Friedman DL, et al.: Late effects of chemotherapy compared to bone marrow transplantation in the treatment of pediatric acute myeloid leukemia and myelodysplasia. Med Pediatr Oncol 1999, 32:163-169. This study reports on a cohort of children treated with either bone marrow transplant or intensive chemotherapy for AML. Because both groups have similar long term complications, the authors argue for treatment planning based on the probability of survival, not late effects.

Neurodevelopmental outcome of infants with acute lymphoblastic leukemia: A children's cancer group report
-
15 Kaleita TA, Reaman GH, MacLean WE, et al.: Neurodevelopmental outcome of infants with acute lymphoblastic leukemia: a Children's Cancer Group report. Cancer 1999, 85:1859-1865. This article reports that infants treated with intensive intrathecal chemotherapy have generally good neurodevelopmental outcomes with a low central nervous system relapse rate. This is a marked improvement from past treatment protocols that included cranial irradiation and resulted in more than half of survivors developing severe neurologic disabilities.

-
35 Relling MV, Rubnitz JE, Rivera GK, et al.: High incidence of secondary brain tumours after radiotherapy and antimetabolites. Lancet 1999, 354:34-39. This article is one of the first to suggest an association between antimetabolite therapy and second malignant neoplasms. The authors propose that the development of second cancers is linked to an enzyme deficiency, and drug doses could be adjusted to patients' enzyme levels.
