This article reports that infants treated with intensive intrathecal chemotherapy have generally good neurodevelopmental outcomes with a low central nervous system relapse rate. This is a marked improvement from past treatment protocols that included cranial irradiation and resulted in more than half of survivors developing severe neurologic disabilities.

This article is one of the first to suggest an association between antimetabolite therapy and second malignant neoplasms. The authors propose that the development of second cancers is linked to an enzyme deficiency, and drug doses could be adjusted to patients' enzyme levels.
