Because both groups have similar long term complications, the authors argue for treatment planning based on the probability of survival, not late effects.

This article reports that infants treated with intensive intrathecal chemotherapy have generally good neurodevelopmental outcomes with a low central nervous system relapse rate. This is a marked improvement from past treatment protocols that included cranial irradiation and resulted in more than half of survivors developing severe neurologic disabilities.

    • 35 Relling MV, Rubnitz JE, Rivera GK, et al.: High incidence of secondary brain tumours after radiotherapy and antimetabolites. Lancet 1999, 354:34-39. This article is one of the first to suggest an association between antimetabolite therapy and second malignant neoplasms. The authors propose that the development of second cancers is linked to an enzyme deficiency, and drug doses could be adjusted to patients' enzyme levels.
