Ten surgically excised membranes were histologically classified as type 1 (beneath the retinal pigment epithelium) or type 2 (between sensory retina and retinal pigment epithelium). Preoperative clinical data were reviewed in a masked fashion, and the membranes were clinically classified as type 1 or type 2. Good correlation existed between the histologic and clinical characterization of these membranes.

Ophthalmologica 1999, 213:139-144. Angiography is useful in predicting the size of this postoperative defect, which was was generally greater in patients with AMD than in those with multifocal choroidopathies or idiopathic CNVM. In AMD, the area of the CNVM and the hyperfluorescent halo seen in the late phase of the angiogram before surgery is only approximately 84% the size of the postoperative defect.

Seventeen eyes were included in this small series. In those eyes with a membrane that was also subfoveal (14 cases) the median preoperative visual acuity was 20/200. Median postoperative visual acuity was 20/40 at the final follow-up visit.

    • 48 Benson MT, Callear A, Tsaloumas M, Chhina J, Beatty S: Surgical excision of subfoveal neovascular membranes. Eye 1998, 12:768-774. Forty-three eyes that underwent surgical excision of CNVM not associated with AMD are reviewed in this report. Seventy-nine percent of the patients had improved or stable visual acuity. Recurrence was noted in 23% of cases. The authors conclude that surgical excision of non-AMD related CNVM may be beneficial.
