-
13 Grossniklaus HE, Gass JD: Clinicopathologic correlations of surgically excised Type 1 and Type 2 submacular choroidal neovascular membranes. Am J Ophthalmol 1998, 126:59-69. Ten surgically excised membranes were histologically classified as type 1 (beneath the retinal pigment epithelium) or type 2 (between sensory retina and retinal pigment epithelium). Preoperative clinical data were reviewed in a masked fashion, and the membranes were clinically classified as type 1 or type 2. Good correlation existed between the histologic and clinical characterization of these membranes.

Ophthalmologica 1999, 213:139-144. Angiography is useful in predicting the size of this postoperative defect, which was was generally greater in patients with AMD than in those with multifocal choroidopathies or idiopathic CNVM. In AMD, the area of the CNVM and the hyperfluorescent halo seen in the late phase of the angiogram before surgery is only approximately 84% the size of the postoperative defect.

43 Sears J, Capone A, Aaberg T, et al.: Surgical management of subfoveal neovascularization in children. Ophthalmology 1999, 106:920-924. A retrospective study of 12 children with CNV who benefited from submacular surgery. The authors suggest that surgery is indicated for children with CNVM who demonstrate worsening of visual acuity, protracted neurosensory detachment with cystoid macular edema, or subfoveal hemorrhage.

Surgical removal of extensive peripapillary choroidal neovascularization associated with presumed ocular histoplasmosis syndrome
-
47 Atebara NH, Thomas MA, Holekamp NM, Mandell BA, Del Priore LV: Surgical removal of extensive peripapillary choroidal neovascularization associated with presumed ocular histoplasmosis syndrome. Ophthalmology 1998, 105: 1598-1605. This retrospective review of patients with peripapillary CNV due to POHS shows some benefit of surgical intervention. Seventeen eyes were included in this small series. In those eyes with a membrane that was also subfoveal (14 cases) the median preoperative visual acuity was 20/200. Median postoperative visual acuity was 20/40 at the final follow-up visit.

Surgical excision of subfoveal neovascular membranes
-
48 Benson MT, Callear A, Tsaloumas M, Chhina J, Beatty S: Surgical excision of subfoveal neovascular membranes. Eye 1998, 12:768-774. Forty-three eyes that underwent surgical excision of CNVM not associated with AMD are reviewed in this report. Seventy-nine percent of the patients had improved or stable visual acuity. Recurrence was noted in 23% of cases. The authors conclude that surgical excision of non-AMD related CNVM may be beneficial.
