3 Beebe DS, Kendall DM, Gruessner RWG, Belani KG. Pancreas transplantation. In: Anesthesia and transplantation. Sharpe MD, Gelb AW (editors). Boston: Butterworth-Heinemann; 1999. pp. 217-240. This is a comprehensive, well-written review of the status of pancreas transplantation from the anesthesia, internal medicine, and surgical perspectives. It is an excellent presentation of the issues that confront anesthesiologists and of the options for managing the perioperative problems that frequently occur.

Comparison of mortality in all patients on dialysis, patients on dialysis awaiting transplantation, and recipients of a first cadaveric transplant

4 Wolfe RA, Ashby VB, Milford EL, Ojo AO, Ettenger RE, Agodoa LYC, et al. Comparison of mortality in all patients on dialysis, patients on dialysis awaiting transplantation, and recipients of a first cadaveric transplant. N Engl J Med 1999; 341:1725-1730. This is a well-designed, nonrandomized, longitudinal study that provides clear, concise evidence that renal transplantation significantly reduces mortality compared with dialysis and that diabetic patients benefit even more than do nondiabetic persons.

Analysis of United States and non-US pancreas transplants as reported to the International Pancreas Transplant Registry (IPTR) and to the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). In: Clinical Transplants. Cecke JM, Terasaki PI (editors). Los Angeles: UCLA Tissue Typing Laboratory; 1998. pp. 53-71. This is an excellent overview of the outcomes in the USA of kidney-pancreas transplantation for 1994-1998. It examines the risk factors for graft loss and patient mortality. The authors are directly involved in the International Pancreas Transplant Registry, which is located at their institution in the Department of Surgery, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Mycophenolate mofetil in pancreas transplantation
-
7 Grussner RWG, Sutherland DER, Drangstveit MB, Wrenshall L, Humar A, Gruessner AC. Mycophenolate mofetil in pancreas transplantation. Transplantation 1998; 66:318-323. This is a good retrospective study that compared the efficacy and complications of the newer immunosuppressants with the old standards. The authors also give a good discussion on the effect these newer antirejection agents have on graft function and other recipient management issues.

The effect of bisoprolol on perioperative mortality and myocardial infarction in high-risk patients undergoing vascular surgery

The effect of bisoprolol on perioperative mortality and myocardial infarction in high-risk patients undergoing vascular surgery. N Engl J Med 1999; 341:1789-1794. This well-controlled study clearly demonstrated that β-receptor blockade is highly effective in reducing the incidence of death and myocardial ischemia during and after major noncardiac surgery in high-risk patients. The study strongly suggests that β-blockade may be one of the most cost-effective methods to reduce surgical morbidity and mortality in patients with significant coronary disease.
