12. Titrations were carried out at Agilent at Little Falls Analytical Division. The silica-bound sulfonic acids were titrated directly with 0.1 N NaOH and amino-functionalized silica was titrated with 0.1 N perchloric acid in glacial acetic acid.

14. These measurements were made by filling a 1.0 mL syringe with dry silica and weighing the material. The Ap Sep material is much harder to pack than the Agilent silica and the measurements are therefore somewhat dependant on how well the column is packed.
