In addition to the content, the style and format are exemplary.

Exploring the effect of depression on physical disability: longitudinal evidence from the established populations for epidemiologic studies of the elderly. Am J Public Health 1999; 89:1346-1352. This study of incident ADL and mobility disability among the community elderly demonstrates that pre-existing depressive symptoms are a significant risk factor.

A careful examination of the response patterns by diagnostic group to several types of disability measures in a community-based sample. This paper contributes much to the understanding of the measurement of disability in community surveys.

26. 26 Sartorius N. Stigma: what can psychiatrists do about it? Lancet 1998; 352:1058-1059. One essay in a group of nine published in the same issue. All are compelling reading. In this particular piece, Sartorius calls psychiatrists to actions in leading the battle against stigma and striving for parity in care and participation.
27. 27 Wahl O. Mental health consumers' experience of stigma. Schizophren Bull 1999; 25:467-478. A comparison group would have made this documentation of the experiences of stigma reported by members of the National Alliance for the Mentally III more powerful.
28. 28 Boisvert CM, Faust D. Effects of the label 'schizophrenia' on causal attributions of violence. Schizophren Bull 1999; 25:479-491. This study showed no difference in label-dependent causal attributions of violence in a group of undergraduates. The authors speculate that it may have been the detailed vignettes revealing an employed individual that may have diminished the effect of labeling.

A small study on undergraduates suggesting that information about and increased exposure to persons with mental illness can change attitudes.
