Across Central Asia the term 'Wahhabite' has become synonymous with 'fundamentalist', but is used by officials and commentators alike with little discretion. In Kyrgyzstan there are more purist Islamicists who would like to purify Islam of practices such as visits to sacred places, extravagant burial customs, etc., but there is little evidence that they pose any serious political threat to the state. At the same time many of the apparent theological differences stem as much from ethnic, regional and personality conflicts as theological differences within the Muslim establishment
