In a typical case a mixture of acetophenone (0.60g, 5 mmol), paraformaldehyde (0.30g, 10 mmol), diethylaminc hydrochloride (0.55g, 5 mmol) and ethanol (5ml) were taken in an Erlenmeyer flask and placed in a microwave oven and irradiated for 5 min, (monitored by TLC). The reaction mixture was allowed to cool and filtered. Removal of solvent and purification of the residue by column chromatography on silica gel gave diethyl(2-benzoyl ethyl)amine hydrochloride mp. 108°C in 65% yield. Other β-amino ketones (entry 5,6,8-12) were prepared similarly using ethanol as solvent.
