1. 1 Kinzie JD, Denney D, Riley C, Boehnlein J, McFarland B, Leung P. A cross-cultural study of reactivation of posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms. J Nerv Ment Dis 1998; 186:670-676. This is an important study in that it is one of the few investigating neurophysiological responses across culturally diverse groups of PTSD sufferers.
2. 2 Summerfield D. A critique of seven assumptions behind psychological trauma programmes in war-affected areas. Soc Sci Med 1999; 48:1449-1462. Summerfield summarizes a ground swell of concerns about the application of the 'Western trauma model' across diverse cultures and contexts. Some assertions, such as the exaggeration of trauma effects are addressed by recent studies [see references 8,17]. The most important criticism relates to the haste with which trauma therapists move en masse into postwar societies, often without regard to the complexity of context and culture.

4. 4 Karam EG, Howard DB, Karam AN, Ashkar A, Shaaya M, Melhem N, et al. Major depression and external stressors: the Lebanon Wars. Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci 1998; 248:225-230. A careful study that addresses the importance of proximity to war as a risk factor for depression.
5. 5 Mollica R, Mcinnes K, Poole C, Svang T. Dose-effect relationships of trauma to symptoms of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder among Cambodian survivors of mass violence. Br J Psychiatry 1998; 173:482-488. This study consolidates previous evidence demonstrating a linear effect of cumulative trauma on risk of a range of posttraumatic psychiatric outcomes. Like other studies, it appears that avoidance may be determined by factors other than trauma exposure per se.

7. 7 Cairns E, Lewis CA. Collective memories, political violence and mental health in Northern Ireland. Br J Psychol 1999; 90:25-33. Persons vary in the salience they give to violent incidents in war zones and factors such as religious affiliation may influence memories of such events.
8. 8 Shrestha NM, Sharma B, Van Ommeren M, Regmi S, Makaju R, Komproe I, et al. Impact of torture on refugees displaced within the developing world: symptomatology among Bhutanese refugees in Nepal. JAMA 1998; 280:443-448. One of a few epidemiological studies undertaken in refugee camps, this report is noteworthy because it underlines the observation that only a minority of displaced persons suffer from PTSD, and torture increases risk.

The dose-effect relationships between torture and psychiatric symptoms in Vietnamese ex-political detainees and a comparison group. J Nerv Ment Dis 1998; 186:543-553. The study consolidates knowledge concerning the impact of cumulative torture events and risk of ongoing PTSD.
10. 10 Steel Z, Silove D, Bird K, McGorry P, Mohan P. Pathways from war trauma to posttraumatic stress symptoms amongst Tamil asylum seekers, refugees and immigrants. J Trauma Stress 1999; 12:421-435. Path analysis is a useful method to apply to data on refugees since their experiences fall into well-defined time epochs. The method allows closer investigation of direct and indirect effects of pre-and postmigration traumas and stresses on PTSD.
11. 11 Holtz TH. Refugee trauma versus torture trauma: a retrospective controlled cohort study of Tibetan refugees. J Nerv Ment Dis 1998; 186:24-34. This study adds support to the special impact of torture on symptoms of anxiety.

13. 13 Bramsen I, Van Der Ploeg HM. Use of medical and mental health care by world war II survivors in The Netherlands. J Trauma Stress 1999; 12:243-261. This is an important population-based study since it shows the impact of PTSD symptoms on help-seeking behaviour. The study is particularly noteworthy because the period under investigation predates the popularization of notions of trauma and PTSD.

15. 15 Silove D. The psychosocial effects of torture, mass human rights violations and refugee trauma: towards an integrated conceptual framework. J Nerv Ment Dis 1999; 187:200-207. This theoretical paper attempts to reconcile recent research findings and theoretical criticisms relevant to the field of mass violence. A multisystem approach to understanding trauma and its consequences is posited. Since most refugees and their communities recover from the mass upheavals they experience, further understanding of dysfunctional reactions in the minority may be advanced by a focus on adaptive responses.
16. 16 Caspi Y, Poole C, Mollica RF, Mar MD, Frankel M. Relationship of child loss to psychiatric and functional impairment in resettlement Cambodian refugees. J Nerv Ment Dis 1998; 186:484-491. This is an important study since it shows the value of including indigenous concepts of mental health in investigating the impact of trauma such as child loss.
17. 17 Mollica RF, McInnes K, Sarajlic N, Lavelle J, Sarajlic I, Massagli MP. Disability associated with psychiatric comorbidity and health status in Bosnian refugees living in Croatia. JAMA 1999; 282:433-439. This study represents a milestone since it applies rigorous epidemiological techniques to investigate the relationship of trauma, PTSD and disability. Clinicians will be heartened by the findings which support the impression that a combination of PTSD and depression is particularly disabling.

The investigation makes a useful contribution by showing differential impacts of political conflict depending on the ethnicity of the young people affected. The data provide some support, albeit indirectly, that political commitment may confer psychological protection against the stress of social turmoil.
24. 24 Yehuda R, Schmeidler J, Wainberg M, Binder-Brynes K, Duvdevani T. Vulnerabilty to posttraumatic stress disorder in adult offspring of holocaust survivors. Am J Psychiatry 1998; 155:1163-1171. The study represents one of the best of its kind in showing systematically an increased vulnerability to PTSD in the offspring of Holocaust survivors.

Trauma exposure, postmigration stressors, and symptoms of anxiety, depression and posttraumatic stress in Tamil asylum seekers: comparisons with refugees and immigrants. Acta Psychiatr Scand 1998; 97:175-181. Asylum seekers - stateless persons living in fear of repatriation - have attracted little research attention. The study supports the contention that asylum seekers have experienced similar traumas to refugees, but the former group experience particular postmigration stresses.

An important pilot study that revives the concept of testimony therapy and hence challenges the contention that talking about mass trauma and human rights violations may be harmful. Further research will need to include comparison groups.
