A model for DNA recombination dependent establishment of a modified replication fork is presented.

    • Rad51-deficient vertebrate cells accumulate chromosomal breaks prior to cell death
    • This is one of a series of extremely elegant studies using the DT-40 chicken cell line to investigate conditional mutations in loci that encode DNA recombination proteins. In this case, the essential role of the RecA homologue Rad51 in S phase progression is dramatically established.
