    • (b) Additional Experimental Note: The switching valve was used to remove column eluent, when required, from a dedicated HPLC system. Eluent was otherwise pumped back to the top of the column completing a cycle, using as short a path volume as possible in order to minimise peak broadening. The HPLC system for purification of (12) used a single piston pump, which required the purpose built switching valve to be continuously connected to a small eluent reservoir to compensate system eluent volume during pump cycles. Each cycle involved 'shaving' (i.e. removing eluent) either pure product from the leading edge of the product peak or unwanted diastereoisomer from the tailing edge of the peak. The 'shaved' peak with its improved, narrowed shape was recycled. During 'shaving', the valve allowed maintenance of column pressure by allowing fresh eluent to be pumped to the top of the column from the main reservoir.
