These authors followed 59 patients who had a unilateral bar and contralateral hemivertebra and documented rapid progression. Most curves were greater than 50° by the time patients were 2 years of age. The authors recommend anterior and posterior arthrodesis in the first year of life.

This is a review of the authors' experience with 11 cases of congenital scoliosis secondary to hemivertebra. The technique of simultaneous anterior and posterior excision of the hemivertebra is described, and associated complications are also discussed. The preoperative mean ages for patients were 18 months. They had an average curve size of 47°, which was corrected to an average curve size of 14° with this surgical technique.
