Motility database, Stanford University Esophageal Motility Laboratory. All motility studies performed from 1993-1997 for the indication of heartburn were analyzed. Motility studies supportive of surgery included patients with normal motility, non-specific motility disorder, nutcracker esophagus, and diffuse esophageal spasm. Studies not supportive of surgery were patients with achalasia, scleroderma or other connective tissue disorders, and studies showing low amplitude of esophageal peristalsis in the esophageal body.
