Motility studies supportive of surgery included patients with normal motility, non-specific motility disorder, nutcracker esophagus, and diffuse esophageal spasm. Studies not supportive of surgery were patients with achalasia, scleroderma or other connective tissue disorders, and studies showing low amplitude of esophageal peristalsis in the esophageal body.
